Overview

Ringing, banners and one-click joins.

DMs ring the other person, and channels show a join banner, so nobody has to paste a link.

Point at the thing.

Share your screen, and everyone’s cursor shows on it with a neon trail, so “click there” means something.

Calls that tidy up after themselves.

When only one person is left, the call ends, and the chat gets a card with who joined and for how long.

HOW IT WORKS

Start a call and share your screen.

  1. 01

    Call.

In a DM or channel, press the green call button.

  2. 02

    Camera on.

Press the camera button; use the ▾ next to it to pick a camera.

  3. 03

    Share.

Press Share screen and pick a window.

FOR ADMINS

What admins control.

Moderation.
The person who starts a call can mute others, stop a share or remove a participant.
Who can call.
Permissions decide who can start calls and record them.
Your network.
Media flows through the LiveKit server and TURN relay in your stack.
Sizing.
Call quality depends on your server and bandwidth. See Self-hosting for what production has run on.

Use cases

  • ENGINEERING

    Pair on a bug.

Share the terminal, point with the cursor, hang up when it’s fixed.

  • DESIGN

    Review a mock live.

Screen share in #design-review, then open a whiteboard.

  • OPS

    Morning stand-up.

One click in #ops-oncall; the call ends when the last person leaves.

And so much more.

  • Deafen and per-device mic and camera menus
  • Speaker and grid layouts
  • Pin a tile for yourself
  • Call chat as a thread
  • Exact call durations in the chat
  • Mini call window while you keep chatting
  • Calls from the desktop app with screen sharing
Do calls go through a third party?

No. Smack ships a LiveKit media server and a TURN relay in its Docker Compose stack, on your server.

How many people can join a call?

It depends on your server’s CPU and bandwidth. We size it with you during installation.

Can I share one window instead of my whole screen?

Yes. The browser or the desktop app lets you choose a screen, a window or a tab.

What happens if I forget to hang up?

The call ends when only one person is left.

Can guests from outside join calls?

Use Meetings with guests: they join with a link and their name.

HOP ON. HANG UP. DONE.
